June Intention: Make It Fun!

Did you know that it's easier for many people with ADHD to get things done if they are stimulating and/or fun? In June, I will be making at least one thing fun every day.

What could you accomplish if you could make it fun?

Imagine this: I'm looking around my workspace, feeling unsettled and unable to get started on any task. Suddenly, the host (my inner voice) dramatically announces, "Welcome to Beat the Clock: Work Edition! Can our contestant complete one task, or even just a chunk of a task, from their list in the next 20 minutes?" All of a sudden, I imagine that I'm competing for a gold medal. I set my timer and dig in.

This is the magic that happens when we recognize what our individual brains need and start working with them instead of against them. Yesterday, I turned an email cleanup into a time management auction: "How much time are you willing to bid on this lovely email sent all the way from your good friends at …? Five minutes? Two minutes? Or perhaps this deserves the lightning-fast archive or delete..."

The beautiful thing about this approach is that it works for almost anything. Folding laundry becomes a speed-folding challenge, finding things in my house or opening mail turns into a treasure hunt, and cleaning is like a build-your-own-adventure. The key is to embrace our need for stimulation and find creative ways to inject it into everyday tasks.

This June, I'm committed to making one thing more interesting each day.

Tracking sheet below. Based on how I’ve been using the Tracking Sheets, I’ve made the energy level area smaller to track daily highlights and added an area for recording patterns or thoughts.

Your future self will thank you for making it fun and for getting it done!
