April Intention: Decluttering More Than Just Objects

Happy April and the beginning of Q2! This month, my focus is on cleaning and organizing. Every day, I will try to declutter one thing. My goal is to clear what's no longer serving me, and clutter isn't just objects. A lot of clutter comes from to-dos that haven't been completed or unaligned expectations. When we want to make a change, we can change what we do, how we do it, or how we think about it. For example, I used to think my house needed to be spotless. Updating that expectation to something more manageable made a real difference.

What type of clutter is costing you the most energy?

Last year, I was able to donate a lot of things I wasn't using, and I was very proud of it. Doing one small step each day can be easier to start and repeat. I often don't have time to clean a closet, but if I can pick one or two things each day, I get a lot more done in the long run.

One improvement I'd like to make this year is to keep a running list of fallback items for days when I'm not sure where to start. Some days the one thing I declutter is tiny and that still counts. Having a list ready removes a barrier and I love checking things off.

Here is a sample list by category:

  • Digital: unsubscribing from emails, deleting unused apps and old phone contacts, clearing out old screenshots or downloads, organizing a photo album to share with others, clearing old bookmarks, consolidating notes from open tabs.

  • Mental/Relational: having a conversation you've been avoiding, releasing an expectation that no longer fits, scheduling something you've been putting off, sending (holiday) cards (I have a few that went to the wrong addresses that I've been holding since January…).

  • Physical: getting rid of expired items, recycling paper, old cards (business cards too), and outdated manuals, donating clothes, books, and household items you no longer use.

What's on your decluttering list?
