February Intention: Compassion

I love equating February with a time to focus on compassion for myself and others!

I'm writing this after a full round of antibiotics that I'm not sure have actually cleared my sinus infection, while also trying to heal a number of tendon, ligament, and muscle injuries.

I mention these as I try to accept my new mantra: healing and change are processes, not destinations.

Is there a change you're trying to make?

Compassion is a powerful ticket to change. Research shows that change is much easier when we focus on the positive than when we beat ourselves. I like to remind myself that encouraging toddlers to walk, or do anything, leads to much better outcomes than yelling at them. It's the same for anyone. Encouragement helps.

My goal for this February is to try and be more encouraging to myself, and others. Want to join in, try this:

  • Notice the language you and others are using. How does it make you feel? Do you feel validated, supported, or encouraged?

  • Think about how you want to feel and what words might help you feel that way.

  • Find ways to connect with your empowering words more often.

Below is a tracking sheet to record your words.

What words help you feel validated and empowered? Do you find it more empowering when you talk to yourself in the first, second, or third person? Below are a few suggestions to try. I like having a few go-to mantras and keeping at least one goal in mind, such as being more compassionate with myself and others.

  • You've got this!

  • Small steps to build new habits.

  • You have a lot to offer.

  • This is hard, and it makes sense that I'm struggling.

  • This aligns with my values.

  • I'm doing the best I can in this moment.

  • I can learn from this, or this is an opportunity for growth.

Hope your February is filled with compassion!
